Rap newcomer Mac Miller was a double winner at the 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards on Thursday.
The hip-hop star beat the likes of The Black Keys, Foster the People and rapper J. Cole to claim the Woodie of the Year, and triumphed over Kanye West and Jay-Z to land the Performing Woodie.
Accepting the awards at the Austin, Texas ceremony, he told the audience, “I’ve worked so hard every day for the last five years and winning tonight means people recognize what I’m doing. I’m really thankful. This is a huge win for my fans and me.”
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ protege Machine Gun Kelly was also victorious – he earned the Breaking Woodie, while dance hit We Found Love, featuring Rihanna, landed Scottish hitmaker Calvin Harris the inaugural Electronic Dance Music Effect Woodie.
Drew Barrymore was also among the winners – the band Best Coast scored the Best Video trophy for Our Deal, which was directed by the actress-turned-filmmaker and featured teen stars Chloe Moretz and Miranda Cosgrove.
The annual music prizegiving celebrates the favorite performers on the U.S. college circuit.
